Newtown buries school massacre dead

NEWTOWN, Connecticut—Heart-rending funerals were held Monday for two six-year-old boys, as America began to say farewell to the 20 children slain in a school shooting that sparked calls for new gun laws.

The first burials, held under raw, wet skies, were of a pair of boys among those shot in Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut. On Tuesday, the first of the girls, also aged six, is to be laid to rest.

In all, on Friday, the gunman slaughtered 20 children aged between six and seven, six adults working at the school and his own mother, before turning one of his arsenal of high-powered firearms on himself.

Man held for Facebook threat to California schools

LOS ANGELES—California police have arrested a man for allegedly making threats on Facebook to “multiple elementary schools,” including by referring to the Connecticut massacre, a spokesman said Monday.

Kyle Bangayan, 24, was arrested Sunday at his parents’ Los Angeles home, where a cache of nine weapons including rifles and handguns was found, as well as ammunition.

No arms were found at Bangayan’s own home in Pomona, some 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Los Angeles, said LA Police Department spokesman Richard French. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was also probing the case.

Stocks rise on deal hopes ahead of fiscal cliff

NEW YORK—US stocks rose Monday amid Wall Street hopes of a political compromise that would prevent the economy from going over the “fiscal cliff” in two weeks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 102.83 points (0.78 percent) at 13,237.84 in closing trade.

The broad-market S&P 500 gained 16.93 points (1.2 percent) at 1,430.51, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite was up 39.27 points (1.32 percent) to 3,010.60.

Witness ties Maguan brod to Go seizure

Eliot Maguan, whose brother was gunned down by former businessman Rolito Go during a traffic altercation in 1991, was linked Monday to the high-profile convict’s abduction in August by one of the suspected kidnappers.

Eliot, brother of victim Eldon Maguan, was said to have conversed with the alleged financier of Go’s abduction by kidnap suspect Armand Mondero, during the closed-door preliminary investigation of the convict’s kidnapping at the Department of Justice (DOJ), according to Go’s lawyer Claire Castro.

Go was convicted of Eldon’s killing and is serving time at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.
