Monster wave ‘very challenging’, says US surfer

PARIS—An American man has described the difficulties of riding monster waves off the coast of Portugal, as he waited to hear whether he had broken the record for the biggest wave ever surfed.

“Personally, it was very challenging,” Garrett McNamara was quoted as saying by surfertoday.com. “You just have to stay in the moment, stay focused on what you’re doing. We’re really comfortable here, but some of those waves…”

McNamara currently holds the world record for the biggest wave surfed after riding a 78-foot (23.77 meter) breaker in Nazare, central Portugal, on November 1, 2011 but on Monday was thought to have gone better at the same location.

Brazil night club owner attempts suicide

SANTA MARIA, Brazil—An owner of the Brazilian night club where 235 people perished in a weekend fire tried to commit suicide, police said Wednesday, as the number of survivors seeking medical treatment after the disaster continued to rise.

Elissandro Sphor tried to kill himself with a plastic shower hose, said senior police official Lilian Carus in the town of Cruz Alta 125 kilometers (about 80 miles) from Santa Maria, where the club owner is hospitalized.

“It was clear he wanted to hang himself,” Carus told AFP, adding that a police officer arrived at the scene — a hospital where Sphor is being treated for gas poisoning — before anything happened.

6.7 magnitude quake hits northern Chile—USGS

SANTIAGO—A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake jolted northern Chile Wednesday, US monitors said, knocking out electricity and local telecom services but no immediate tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake occurred at 2015 GMT, at the relatively shallow depth of 47.5 kilometers (29.5 miles) and the epicenter was located 102 kilometers (63 miles) from the mining town of Copiapo, the US Geological Service said.

That is about 800 km (500 miles), north of the capital Santiago. Chilean authorities did not immediately report any fatalities.
