2 drown, 2 missing in Iloilo floods spawned by ‘Quinta’

ILOILO CITY, Philippines—Two persons drowned and two others remained missing in Iloilo as of Wednesday night, after heavy rains brought by typhoon “Quinta” triggered flooding in several municipalities in the province.

Jerry Bionat, executive officer of the provincial disaster risk reduction and management council, identified the drowning victims as Warlito Lutero of Janiuay town and Arnulfo Bayotes of Barotac Nuevo town.

The two missing persons were reported in Lambunao and San Miguel towns.

Fifteen towns and Passi City experienced flooding.

Aquino’s classmate Caguioa eyed as chief presidential counsel

MANILA, Philippines—President Aquino will name a new chief presidential legal counsel in January 2013, and lawyer Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, who was Aquino’s classmate in Ateneo, is being considered for the post.

“He (Caguioa) is under consideration,” presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda told reporters at a Palace briefing on Wednesday.

Lacierda, however, said he had yet to receive any confirmation from the Office of the Executive Secretary.

Caguioa was a classmate of Aquino at Ateneo de Manila University, from grade school to college.

Indian gang-rape victim to be flown to Singapore—reports

NEW DELHI—An Indian student who was left fighting for her life after being gang-raped in New Delhi is to be flown for treatment to Singapore, medical sources and reports said on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old, whose attack sparked protests across India, has been moved from the Safdarjung hospital in central Delhi to Medanta hospital in Gurgaon, close to the city’s international airport, a source at Safdarjung told AFP.

She would then be flown out for treatment abroad, the source added, without confirming her destination.

“The decision was taken this morning at cabinet,” said the source. “Her mother and father are with her.”

SC asked to scrap TRO on installation of online lotto terminals in Luzon

MANILA, Philippines—Lottery equipment and service provider Pacific Online Systems Corp. has asked the Supreme Court to junk a lower court order restraining the state-owned Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office from installing and operating any of the former’s online lottery terminals in Luzon.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Wednesday, the Pacific Online said it has filed a petition for certiorari and/or prohibition against Makati Regional Trial Court presiding judge branch 143 Rommel Baybay.
