What Went Before: Michael Ray Aquino and the Dacer-Corbito killings

Former police intelligence officer Michael Ray Aquino fled the country in 2001 after he was implicated in the Dacer-Corbito killings.

Publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito, were abducted on Nov. 24, 2000, at an intersection in Makati City. Their charred remains were found in April 2001 in a creek in Cavite and identified by forensic experts from dental records and personal items.

Sulpicio Lines gone; owners form new company

CEBU CITY—Technically, Sulpicio Lines Inc. ceased to exist after it changed its name.

The owner and operator of the ill-fated MV Doña Paz is now known as Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corp.

According to records at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company changed its name through a resolution adopted on Dec. 19, 2009, by a majority vote of the members of the board of directors and stockholders.

Ombudsman junks raps vs Muntinlupa mayor

The Office of the Ombudsman has absolved incumbent Muntinlupa City Mayor Aldrin San Pedro from complaints for dishonesty and grave misconduct, which he allegedly committed prior to his reelection in 2010.

A seven-page decision signed by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales dismissed the complaints filed by former City Councilor Rafael Arciaga against the mayor for being moot.

Doomsday group converge on hill in Surigao for end of the world

SURIGAO CITY—Over the past several months, followers of a cult said to be led by a little-known movie actor have been converging on a hill in preparation for the beginning of what they believe will be doomsday.

Calling itself H-World, the group says Dec. 21 marks the beginning of the “Great Darkness” and the coming of the “Divine Government.” It coincides with the much-talked-about date Mayans had supposedly prophesied would be the end of the world.
