Iligan Acknowledged Women on International Women’s Day

(Monday11th day of March 2019)

Iligan City – In celebration of the International Women’s Day, the office of the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) and City Gender and Development Office (GAD) spearheaded the celebration on March 8, at the City Public Plaza with the theme: “We Make Change Work for Women”.

“Ang babaye ug lalaki kinahanglan patas lang kay ang babaye para sa ako, kamo ang kahayag sa panimalay. Kay kahayag man mutimbang mo sainyong kabanahan para dili pod maglisod inyong mga bana,” (Women and men should be equal because for me, women are the light of every family, and as the light, you should support your husbands so they will not be burdened,) City Mayor Regencia said.

“Kamong mga kababainhan mao’y kasingkasing og kalag sa atong katilingban,” (Women are the heart and soul of our society,) expressed Vice Mayor Vera Cruz. “Sa tinuoray lang kon wala ang mga babaye sa ato katilingban diha sa pamilya, kanang pamilyaha patay og wala’y kahayag,” (In fact, without these women in our society, families would be inanimate and lifeless,) he added.

“Aduna ta’y mga balaodnon alang sa mga kababainhan aron sa pag protect, nag una mao ang Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) ubos sa Republic Act (RA) 9262. Ang atong Magna Carta of Women ubos sa Republic Act (RA) 9710 diin nagbutang siya’g probisyon nga duna’y equal opportunity sa mga kababainhan og usab dili pod ma discriminate,” (We have laws that protect women. First is the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) under RA 9262 and the Magna Carta of Women under RA 9710 wherein it has been provided that there should be equal opportunities and rights for women without discrimination.) Ms. Grace Joy Saquilabon, head of CSWD stated.

Women’s Day is the day to recognize the achievements of women and the role they are playing in the development in politics, education and economy. Gone were the days when we look at women as victims. Women have taken the challenge with big leaps from their traditional roles, dismissing the old concept that women are the weaker sex. The event drew the participation of honoured female leaders as well as distinguished male and female Iliganons coming from various barangays.  City officials headed by the City Mayor Celso Regencia together with Vice Mayor Jemar Vera Cruz also joined the said event.

The celebration showcased the common cause we all share in supporting the limitless potential and the uniqueness of being a woman.
