LGU Workers Hold Flag Raising at NSC Grounds

(Tuesday, 7th day of November 2017)

ILIGAN CITY – Iligan City Hall employees held their flag raising ceremony at the grounds of the National Steel Corporation Administration Building II, at the Plant compound in Suarez, Iligan City in time for the Consolidation of ownership of the National Steel Corporation Properties to the city government of Iligan on November 6, Monday.

Stated in a flyer distributed during the said event, National Steel Corporation (NSC) is a steel processing plant with a production capacity of 1,300,000 metric tons of processed steel per annum. It was organized in February 1974 from the assets of Iligan Integrated Steel Mills (IISMI) which later was foreclosed by DBP. In 1981, the National Development Corporation (NDC) assumed full ownership of NSC.

NSC occupies 450 hectares in Suarez Iligan City. The area of the manufacturing plant and facilities consists of 250 hectares and the rest are for housing, recreational and vacant lands. It was the largest steel plant in Southeast Asia and one of the top five (5) corporations in the Philippines from the 1970’s up to 1994 along with PLDT, Meralco, etc.

I will never forget this event today wherein the people of Iligan took complete ownership of the National Steel Corporation despite criticisms and scoffs that we are punching the moon because we had gigantic opponents. The power that you entrusted me, with the vice mayor and the councilors, will be used to mobilize the NSC again. Punching the moon might be impossible, however, this time it is the moon that came down to us and we punched it.)

NSC suffered several foreclosures and bankruptcy due to mismanagement and on October 19, 2016, the City of Iligan sold all NSC properties in Iligan City at a tax delinquency sale. On November 6, 2017, the ceremonial signing of the Deed of Sale/Forfeiture of NSC properties and the consolidation of ownership of the city over the NSC properties took place.
